Category: COP 26
COP26 recently concluded in Glasgow, to very mixed reactions as to what it entails for global climate action.
What is the COP?
The Conference of Parties is the supreme decision-making body of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Why is this COP significant?
COP26 was convened to move on definitively from the promises made at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP21), and actually work out the details of turning these commitments into concrete action.
Was it successful?
To an extent – both yes and no. Critics have noted that it represented a positive step towards affirmative climate action, but also lamented the fact that several agreements and commitments seemed to fall far short of what was expected.
The Bottom Line
While COP26 is a step in the right direction, much more work remains to be done in terms of affirmative climate action, with hope that successive events can build upon the progress made in Glasgow.
