Greenhouse Gas Assesments
The Star Garment Group
CC worked with the Star Garments Group (a Komar company), that specialises in apparel sourcing, design and manufacturing to assess the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of its 14 facilities located in Sri Lanka. The group was subsequently certified as a CarbonNeutral®and is the first and only group of companies in the global apparel sector to achieve this status. The comprehensive GHG Assessment is compliant with the Carbon Disclosure Project, Carbon Neutral Protocol and follows guidelines of the internationally-recognised GHG Protocol.
The Hirdaramani Group
CKT Mihila, one of the factories of the Hirdaramani Group was awarded the CarbonNeutral® Certification in 2012, thus making them the first apparel plant in Asia to achieve this accolade. The process required a detailed GHG Assessment, which followed the Carbon Disclosure Project, Carbon Neutral Protocol and the WBCSD/WRI GHG Protocol, a comprehensive programme of internal efficiency measures and a purchase of carbon credits by supporting a registered carbon offset project to offset the remaining emissions. They have continued to be CarbonNeutral for 7 consecutive years.
Lanka Leather Fashions
One of Asia’s most renowned leather manufacturers and suppliers to fashion brands such as Hugo Boss, Gerry Weber, Michael Kors and Taleco, demonstrated its commitment to being an environmentally conscious company in 2015 when they obtained the CarbonNeutral® Certification after undergoing a detailed GHG Assessment, which is compliant with the Carbon Disclosure Project, Carbon Neutral Protocol and the WBCSD/WRI GHG Protoco. They have continued to be CarbonNeutral for 5 consecutive years.
The Bank of Ceylon
The Bank of Ceylon (BoC) is the first Sri Lankan State-Owned bank to carry out an Organisational Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Assessment that included its Head Office, Province Offices, Branches, Loan Centres and ATMs. This comprehensive and large-scale assessment looked at emission sources from Scopes 1 and 2 that included generator fuel, owned vehicles, fugitive emissions and purchased electricity. Several key recommendations to mitigate the environmental impact of the bank were suggested and CCC worked closely with the BOC Sustainability Team to help implement these. This assessment was conducted and independently verified to award BOC with the ISO 14064-1 Certification by The Sustainable Future Group (SFG) to companies that identify specific activities or actions that are aimed at improving GHG management.
Nations Trust Bank
CCC conducted GHG Assessments for three main offices and ten branches of NTB, one of Sri Lanka’s leading banks. The assessments were conducted in compliance with the GHG Protocol developed by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development. For NTB’s main offices, all three Scopes were taken into consideration, and the bank was able to renew its commitment to sustainability by obtaining the CarbonConscious®Certification. This is a three-year engagement where comprehensive GHG assessments are undertaken with customised mitigation and Carbon Management Plans are provided to minimise carbon emissions
Peoples Leasing Company
The leading provider of leasing services in Sri Lanka, with customers ranging from individuals to blue chip conglomerates, PLC recognised the increasing consumer demand for green products and services globally and obtained the CarbonNeutral® Company Certification by Natural Capital Partners, through their regional partner of The Sustainable Future Group. The comprehensive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Assessment by CCC was done for the Head Office, 105 branches, 5 Service Centres and 5 wholly owned subsidiaries. This assessment was based on the WBCSD/WRI GHG Protocol with all three Scopes being considered as per this globally recognised GHG accounting standard. A few of the emissions sources that were looked at during this assessment were Purchased Electricity, On-site Energy Generation, Third-party Deliveries and Company owned and Controlled vehicles. This was a milestone in PLC’s sustainability journey to reduce its operational impact on the environment.
Walkers Tours
History was made in 2012 when Walkers Tours’ core business element – their vehicle fleet – became the first in Asia to go CarbonNeutral, and to date, remains the only company in their sector in Sri Lanka to hold this status. This significant effort in environmental consciousness and the reduction of their operational impact on global emissions was recently recognised by the developer of The CarbonNeutral Protocol, Natural Capital Partners of the UK, who presented their long-standing global climate champions with special commemorative plaques.
The assessment was conducted by The Carbon Consulting Company (CCC), who has assisted and directed Walkers Tours from the beginning of their sustainability journey in managing and mitigating the operational emissions of their vehicle fleet. Walkers Tours’ certification was awarded by the Sustainable Future Group (SFG), Sri Lanka’s only accredited sustainability verification and certification body that is authorised to verify and validate Organisational and Project-level Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventories according to the official GHG Reporting ISO Standards, ISO 14064 Parts 1 and 2.
EFL
EFL is one of the largest freight forwarders in Sri Lanka and has established itself as a premier provider of freight and logistics services. EFL presently operates in Africa, the Middle East and Asia and represents multiple agents in the Indian Subcontinent. The current infrastructure supports multi-mode transportation and logistics with Ocean and Air transportation as the core areas within land trucking haulage, warehousing, customs clearance & handling, and project cargo. In 2012 EFL was awarded the CarbonNeutral® Certification upon completion of a comprehensive assessment conducted by the CCC team.
This Assessment was conducted in accordance with the WBCSD/WRI GHG Protocol, which is also compliant with the Carbon Disclosure Project. Recommendations and mitigation methods were given by the CCC team to reduce the Carbon footprint of EFL which further reduced their footprint by 10%. Further to being awarded the CarbonNeutral® Certification they were also South Asia’s first Freight and Logistic company to obtain the ISO 14064-1 Certification in 2016. CCC developed a Carbon Management Response Plan to further reduce the carbon footprint of EFL and achieve their GHG emissions reductions target.
Mountain Hawk Express
As the Licensee of FedEx and TNT in Sri Lanka, MHE has been playing a game changing role in the country for the past 31 years, offering fast, reliable and time definite express transportation to a range of industries. MHE was Sri Lanka’s first transportation and logistics services provider to receive the CarbonConscious® certification and is a leader in taking the country’s logistics industry towards a carbon neutral future. For this to be possible they called upon the services of CCC to monitor and manage their carbon footprint for 3 years.
Comprehensive annual assessments were done each year taking into consideration all 3 Scopes, where the team assessed the emissions sources and made necessary recommendations for MHE to reduce their carbon footprint. Notable mentions such as forming a green team and providing MHE with a Carbon Management Plan helped reduce their overall footprint. Due to the Key Performance Indicators developed by CCC they were able to identify where the company stands with its GHG management system and highlight any areas that needed improvement and development.
Elpitiya Plantations
One of Sri Lanka’s leading producers of the most exquisite high-quality premium tea, Elpitiya Plantations includes 13 estates covering both up and low country areas of Sri Lanka. The CCC team carried out a comprehensive GHG assessment for them to pinpoint areas where emissions reductions could be possible. The assessment followed the internationally accepted GHG Protocol, which is also compliant with the Carbon Disclosure Project. Key areas for emissions reductions were highlighted, and solutions to reduce their carbon footprint from all 3 Scopes were provided by the CCC team.
N Ranga Rao & Sons
The makers of Cycle Pure Agarbathies, NRRS, became the first in the world in 2014 to obtain the CarbonNeutral®Certification, creating a benchmark within the incense sticks industry. CCC conducted a detailed assessment that followed the standards of the Carbon Disclosure Project, Carbon Neutral Protocol and the GHG Protocol established by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development. This ensured that the process is internationally recognised and goes through a stringent and thorough verification process. Emissions sources such as fuel consumption, electricity consumption and material consumption as well as direct emissions released from sources that are owned or controlled by the company, indirect emissions associated from purchased electricity and other sources including business travel, employee commuting, and third party deliveries were used to formulate the carbon footprint of the company. NRRS have been offsetting their carbon footprint for the past 6 years, showcasing their commitment towards the planet and its people.
Aitken Spence Printers
Sri Lanka’s premier printing and packaging service provider and a subsidiary of the blue-chip conglomerate Aitken Spence PLC have offset their carbon footprint for the past seven years. The company offers a wide range of services from packaging, publications, magazines and seasonal products such as calendars and diaries and caters to a wide range of industries including tea, apparel, FMCG and pharmaceuticals. They were the first CarbonNeutral® printing facility in South Asia and have continued their commitment to being a sustainable business entity. Aitken Spence Printing has also renewed its ISO 14064-1 Certification, further reiterating the importance of being a business entity that is genuinely concerned about their GHG emissions and impact on the environment.
The Sheraton Maldives
CCC was commissioned for this project as a part of the hotel’s energy and cost reduction strategy. The CCC Team carried out a detailed energy audit of the hotel operations, and presented a comprehensive report detailing the hotel’s energy balance, highlighted key areas of inefficiencies and provided suggested solutions for energy reduction measures. The report also evaluated the hotel’s energy consumption pattern, its energy management and accounting practices, the daily load profile, and provided a detailed list of opportunities for Energy Performance Indicator improvement. A complete Greenhouse Gas Assessment was also carried out encompassing Scope 1, 2 & 3 Emissions. The highest emission sources were identified and linked to energy reduction measures. A comprehensive water audit was carried out as well, with a calculation of the cost of water consumption at the premises
The Colombo Court
South Asia’s First CarbonNeutral®Certified city hotel, Colombo Court Hotel and Spa has set the bar high when it comes to being sustainable when they took the initiative of becoming a Carbon Neutral hotel in 2014 with the help of CCC. Following a GHG assessment, they purchased carbon credits to support a verified renewable energy project to offset their emissions. Colombo Court provides luxurious accommodation, dining and spa facilities while keeping sustainability as its core value. CCC conducted a comprehensive assessment considering all three Scopes, in accordance with the GHG Protocol, developed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Carbon Disclosure Project. Emission sources such as generation of imported energy carriers such as electricity, heat and steam, and business travel, waste disposal and outsourced activities were quantified in this assessment
The W Maldives
The W Retreat and Spa Maldives is one of the finest and most modern luxury resorts in the Maldives. With 78 rooms, 49 of which are water villas, the private-island complex has a huge array of dining and activity possibilities for a hotel this size. As the hotel wanted to reduce its operational impact on the environment, CCC was retained to conduct a comprehensive GHG assessment, which encompassed all 3 Scopes, to measure and mitigate emissions. The assessment followed the internationally accepted GHG Protocol, which is also compliant with the Carbon Disclosure Project. These standards provide guidelines regarding organisational and operational boundaries, quantification, and standard reporting practices. Recommendations and customised emissions reduction strategies were provided by the CCC team with regards to third-party deliveries and electricity consumption as these were the main emission hotspots.
