The Hirdaramani Group, with 100+ years of experience, is not only a pioneer in the apparel industry, but has expanded into other areas such as leisure, power, IT and retail. The Hirdaramani Group has 38 apparel manufacturing facilities across Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Vietnam. These facilities encompass activities from manufacturing and product development to embroidery, washing and packing of apparel. Some of these facilities have been awarded LEED certification, including Mihila in 2009, along with Kuruvita, Vavuniya and Kahathuduwa Factories in 2015.
The Mihila Factory of CKT Apparel (Pvt) Ltd is a part of the Hirdaramani Group’s knit cluster and is one of the better-known factories in Sri Lanka. It was also the first CarbonNeutral® certified factory in Asia and the World’s First Custom-Built Green Apparel Factory. This was obtained through the conduct of an Organisational Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Assessment for CKT Apparel (Pvt) Ltd. The process followed the WBCSD/WRI GHG Protocol, Carbon Disclosure Project, and the CarbonNeutral® Protocol, a comprehensive programme of internal efficiency measures, and a purchase of carbon credits to offset the remaining emissions.
All three scopes were taken into consideration and the emissions sources that were considered are: waste disposal and transportation; foreign business travel; purchased electricity; onsite energy; and third-party deliveries, to name a few. CKT Mihila has been offsetting their carbon footprint for the past 9 years, in a demonstration of their ongoing commitment to sustainability.
